Staff Profile - Bill Horn

Bill Horn acquired his first camera, a Nikon F with 50mm lens in 1973 after borrowing one from a friend. He then spent three years learning the basics before becoming a part-time photojournalist from 1975-80, working for two Oklahoma newspapers. As an amateur photographer, his passion has always been photographing wildlife, and his images have appeared in several local, state, and national publications. After getting married in 1985, Bill took a 10-year hiatus from serious photography.

But in 1995, the bug bit again, and Bill made the leap from older manual Nikons to the new and evolving world of auto-focus equipment. He presently utilizes Canon EOS equipment. His "every day" rig consists of an EOS 1V, 600/4L IS lens with a 1.4X teleconverter, and his backup rig is an ELAN 7E with 400/5.6 L attached. He relies heavily on his Gitzo 1548 carbon fiber tripod and Wimberley head for support with the heavy rig. He uses slide film exclusively, and Fuji Velvia and Provia F are his favorites.

Four years ago, Bill decided to merge his hobby of bird watching with his zeal for nature photography. He now spends every spare moment afield acquiring images of the avian species both migratory and indigenous to Oklahoma. He is currently working with the Oklahoma Ornithological Society, supplying them bird images for a "Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas" to be published in 2002. Specializing in bird photography presents a big challenge for Bill. Getting quality images of small, fast moving targets requires patience, a modicum of skill, some luck, and a long lens to bring them in as close as possible.

More of Bill's work can be found on his Birds of Oklahoma web site.
