Book Review... Stranger in the Woods
All rights reserved. Stranger in the Woods is a 48-page, hardcover children's book with color photographs, measuring 9 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. It is written, photographed and published by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick, and sells for $19.95. ISBN: 0-9671748-0-09. This photographic fantasy-the story's subtitle- is a favorite of adults and children alike. Stranger in the Woods is illustrated with full-color photographs of White-tailed Deer-does, fawns, and bucks-and a variety of birds and small mammals in a natural winter setting. These captivating images are obviously a result of patient photographic technique, natural opportunities, and carefully planned, creative situations by Sams and Stoick-who are two noted wildlife photographers. The presentation of these images and masterful design create a magical reading experience. The story's woodland inhabitants react to a snowman that mysteriously arrives in the forest the morning following a winter snowstorm. One by one, animals from the woods approach the snowman out of curiosity-the braver going first, following a human-like debate of "who" should investigate. A pleasant discovery by the residing wildlife reveals that the snowman is friendly, and that he offers treats to all who come-a carrot, seeds, and nuts. The heartwarming story allows readers to discover who is supplying the snowman with the edible entries. No doubt, this story of intrigue and discovery will warm the heart of every reader.
