Me on a hot morning at work (Rick Gomez)

This is me sweating my monkey butt off just after cleaning King's (the gorilla's) shift tunnel... I'm not too fond of summer in Florida.
Part of my job requirement is to spend about 45 minutes each morning bonding with my big buddy. He has always had an interest in my camera and I finally trusted him enough with it to let him hold it (scary!). He doesn't quite understand the concept of the view finder yet, but he gets excited when he sees an image come up on the lcd. It only took him a minute to learn what pushing the button will do. He must have taken about 90 pictures and about 40 were of me. I kinda cheated on this one because I just let go of the camera when I was trying to teach him to aim (I was talking to him here)... Still, he pushed the button, therefore this photo truly was taken by a gorilla.

An amazing story behind the photo - I'd be sweating too if I was within reach of an 800 pound gorilla! I think many people would love to have the opportunity to work with primates and learn first-hand that in many ways they're not much different than us.

Thanks for posting!

Great story and photo, Rick. Truthfully, I'm not fond of summer in Florida either. Went there once, never been back. I truly did not have the gill capacity to process that much humidity out of the air and almost drowned.

Hi Rick,

My Buddy! That image has stuck in my mind! I can just imagine him taking your photo! Tell him from me, he's nearly as good as the trainer! Really nice to see you Rick! I'll see you back in Avian and Fauna!

A great story, and a great image considering a gorilla actually took it! Nice to see you!

I don't what to say to an ape about his photography. I'm glad he is developing a rapport with his subject.
