When composing this shot I was rather taken by the hint of structure in the background, which I personally feel complements the image without being too intrusive. I shot through some foreground grass to try to get the right balance of structure and smoothness. Do you think it works?

Canon EOS-10D, Sigma 180mm EX macro, 1/500 @ f/5.6, ISO100, manual focus. Flash @ -1 2/3. Cropped about 10% all round.

I really think you succeeded well, with the structure and smoothness. The bacground structure really adds something special to the picture. A well composed picture as well.

Hanne

Really a nice effect here with the blurred, but still somewhat structured foreground and background that makes this image different and special. Nice exposure as well.

Jim,

The OOF surrounding vegetation really looks great, infact very nice. It contrast nicely with the sharpness of the flower. Really like the illumination on the flower, makes it stand out strongly against the background. Normally the centered composition of the flower would look static, but in this case for some reason, it looks great.

Jim,
Great shot. You definitely made it work. The few blades of grasses that are almost in really make it for me; it gives this a sense of place.... Kudos!

What I like about this is the sense of habitat. These typically grow in grassy meadows and you have captured that with a wonderful soft feel. I remeber seeing these by the thousands in the meadows at Wicken Fen an National Trust property in Cambridgeshire, England.
