Autumnal mushrooms
by Mark Fellowes
Hi
This is a focus-stacked image (5 shots merged using Helicon Focus) of some small mushrooms growing on a rotting log. I liked how they were cramped together, in spite of apparently having plenty of space.
Techs: D300; 180 macro, 1/8sec @ F5.6, slight fill using Nikon R1C1 macro flash (both set to -2 stops), tripod. PP in Capture NX2, Helicon Focus and PS CS2 (curves, sharpening). This is pretty much full frame.
Any thoughts or comments appreciated!
Thanks for looking.

8 commentsI find the OOF object/growth on the LLC a bit distracting though.
BTW, are you using a sigma macro ?

I like the composition quite a bit. The out of focus area in the lower left corner seems out of place in such a tidy composition. I know that sort of element can give depth to an image, but I think you have already done that with the sharp mushrooms against the poster-like background.
Nice job on lighting too, by the way.

Thanks for commenting - it's appreciated! It is the Sigma macro, which I like a lot, now that I've got used to working with a macro at a longer focal length.
I debated with myself about the OOF area in the front. This is because the stump came around towards me, and would have been difficult to render I think. I wanted to give a sense of depth (a bit like a landscape) as otherwise it would all have been on one plane - I could clone it out but I suspect that it would look obvious (and if I moved around to the right, you would have seen the ragged chuck bitten out of the far right mushroom!).
