A town that once was

Ardmore, SD, 2009. Pretty much a ghost town now, Ardmore once hosted an event with President Calvin Coolidge.

The clouds became heavy and the late afternoon light disappeared, only to reappear for a few minutes as the sun dipped between the cloud layer and the horizon. The cottonwoods and this old water tower glowed brightly. I had been walking around taking hand helds of abandoned homes and other buildings, and was walking back to the car when the light reappeared.

I had to try something with those trees against the dark sky. I took this braced over a fence post to use a slow shutter speed in windy conditions, which allowed the grass some motion blur. The effect worked about as I planned, but when processing the image the range of tones made me think of trying a b & w conversion. I am a little out of my element with this kind of experiment, so let me know what you think.

Hi Lon, I like the starkness and simplicity. The expanse of black and slate dominates. It doesn't necessarily direct the viewer to conclude that this is an abandoned town...an isolated water tower...yes. But the msg is unclear. Title could also be "Light Before the Storm". I would wonder what brightening and mottling the sky would do to create more interest and suggest greater depth. I like the grass and its motion. Ken S

Really like the B&W conversion with the strong contrasts. The shadows of the trees on the grass add some nice mottling too.

Lon,

Not only an outstanding timing and capture, but the conversion is excellent as well. To me, this really captures the essence of "Dorothy's Kansas." Ok, South Dakota, but hopefully you get my meaning. The light and motion in the grasses as well as the water tower, cottonwoods and brooding sky all work together wonderfully. I really like this.

I haven't seen such a powerful effect of light and shadow for some time. I feel myself getting sucked into this scene.

Lon, I find your capture, conversion, and the title message to be excellent overall. In earlier days I always looked for windmills, stock loading chutes, grain elevators, barns, tractors and such, but found it was a bit depressing seeing some of the good old days being urbanized away. Thanks for sharing this excellent scene of small town Americana.

A very dramatic shot indeed, and what great luck for the light to come just then. The movement in the grass is just spectacular. Beautiful processing. Congrats on the EP !
