Fulmar in flight

While on a boattrip Fulmars were flying really close to the boat, so I thought about using the wideangle lens to add some environment to the shot. I was shooting against the light so I used some fill-flash (-2/3) to brighten up the bird. Of about 100 images I shot this was one of the few that worked out quite well.

Canon EOS10D
Canon EF17-40/4.0 @40
Manual exposure
Handheld

Nice shot Jasper! Good choice using the 17-40, the environment really adds to the overall image.

Enjoy your time on Spitsbergen my friend!

I love bird AND landscape photography; this is the perfect combination of the two. This is my kind of bird photography; so much more evocative (IMHO) than bird-on-a-stick type photos (no offence to BOAS photographers). The beautiful environment adds much to the shot, and fill-flash is well handled. Excellent work, Jasper!

"Quite well" hardly does this image justice. Wonderful concept and execution. Congrats! :toast:

That is so beautiful, and indeed it's great to see a marvelous bird picture that wouldn't work for a field guide.

Not that there's anything wrong with those! -- as Seinfeld might say...

Jasper, it's about time you come back home, because I feel you're making a little too many good photos there!!

This is really great and easily worth the 100 shots you made. The fulmar must really have been very close! I love the combination of the seascape and the bird. It gives you the impression that you're flying right beside him, seeing his surroundings exactly as he does. The fill flash is used in a perfect way. I think that this would deserve a 10 =D.

I really like the vastness of the landscape behind. This is a superb perspective and one that we don't see often with bird photos. Unfortunatly telephotos flatten that perspective too much and we never get such effect as you did..this is really cool!
