Ayer's Rock, Uluru-Kata Tjuta NP, Australia

After witnessing a mind-blowing sunset with rainbows and sweeping pink clouds, this was the final image of the session, a 5 minute exposure with the faint afterglow on the massif picked up by the camera. I light-painted the foreground with the headlights from my car so it's also my first attempt at light-painting. This is probably my favourite shot of the icon I made since I haven't seen any other shots too similar to it.

Canon 1DsMkIII, 16-35mm 2.8L.

Wow. Just wow. This is incredible. Excellent use of multiple creative techniques here. This is perhaps the coolest image of this rock that I've seen!

That's a new kind of capture of that place for sure and I like it. You get some great depth here with the dynamic clouds. The foreground looks fine as well - web resolution is a bad place for all the fine grass though. I see great "big-print-potential" here.

Definitely a unique shot. The light on the left grass seems a bit harsh, and the llc is bare which throws off the balance for me. I see a crop in the middle of the frame that would highlight the two prominent grass clumps in the front.

This is truly magnificent! You just couldn't have asked for a better cloud pattern here.
Those are car lights? What a great idea, and it worked very, very well.
Agree that the grasses on the left are a bit too bright.
Tone them down to match the more natural lighting in the center and right and you've got a winner. I'm sure the haloes on the rock aren't visible in the original file.

Glad you were here for light show. Would love to see the earlier lights of which you mention.
Excellent work!

Very cool, I wouldn't have guessed those were car lights on the fg grasses at all, excellent idea. Those clouds are killer as well.

Great image.

Terribly clever to use the car lights so well to light up the fg. The clouds are amazing and you have really raised the bar for ingenuity and effect.

Very sureal work, Kah Kit! The clouds really worked in your favour and with your touch of inspiration to use the car headlights, this one is ahead of any shots I've seen with this amazing monolith. Just great!

That sky is just fantastic, and the idea of using your car's headlight to lighten the foreground sets this apart from everything else I've already seen from this wonderful place. I agree with others that the grass on the left side is too hot (your right high-beam was burnt out, perhaps  ) but other than that I have no other advices, this is just about perfect.

That is great. I love the sky and the colour of the bush painted. Maybe i dont like so much the empty patch of the lower left corner, and too much background compete a little bit with the real center of interest (uluru and maybe even more the sky streaks)...At the same time i was thinking this image might suit very well a panoramic format, getting rid of some of the background and making the viewer focus more on the sky patterns. Personally i think the image would improve (this is subjective!) if cropping some of the lower part. Anyway, i must confess i am a freak of the panoramic format! :) Keep the good job Kah, it is always a pleasure commenting your shots. Good light. Rafael, Switzerland.

You nailed it KK!! Excellent vision to come back with this image. Everything worked perfectly. I am really impressed with your exposure contol given the difficulties of metering for a 5 minute exposure and matching the late evening glow with the brightness of your car headlights. If you hadn't said anything, I would not have known you light painted the foreground- you exposed it so perfectly! This is my new favorite image from you. And I agree- one of the coolest shots I've seen of the icon and that is no easy feat. I hope this generates a lot of interest in your photography as well as a few sales! :toast: :toast:

This is just amazing. Your light painting looks more like sunrise light, in fact I wouldn't have guessed your technique. The cloud rays emanating from the rock are especially appealing.

The cloud motion was very cooperative, Kah. I like the FG lighting idea, but it is probably a little too much - you may try to reduce luminosity of the FG a little. Those grasses taking too much attention

Really a unique technique and a successful image. I wish the LLH corner had some of the golden grasses in it but that's pretty minor. Nice work, Kah Kit!

Lovely idea Kah a very imaginative image. I reckon you could turn this into a more panoramic version and draw slightly less attention to the grass which is a little too harshly lit. Great idea though and probably a one of a kind.

That rocks! (yea, bad pun). I like Ben's vertical comp suggestions, but I think the pano format suits the rock and cloud radiance better. Very nice!

The blur in the sky adds an outstanding dynamic element to this image. I'd like to see the middle plants be a bit more centerstage (they play well off the sky), and thiink perhaps a crop off the sides already suggested might add just that.

Great shot, Kah Kit. Love the radiating long exposure cloud formation exploding from the rock, it really focuses your attention on the rock. The centred comp also helps this effect a lot too. The red earth looks great, but the grass seems a little over exposed from the light painting (did you use high-beam? ). A fabulous shot!!

Thanks for your comments. I might work on brightening the two bushes in the centre and darkening the left to even things out. Works OK as a vertical but the bigger you go the less convincing it is so I'm sticking to a pano unless I submit it as a cover of course.
Pete I might steal your comment to use as its title.

Beautiful image. The radiating lines are perfectly captured and the motion in the clouds contrasts nicely with the seemingly still grass. Darkening the left a bit and brightening the center is a good idea. Well conceived and executed image.

Great shot Kah Kit, a very unique perspective on a much photographed icon. Just a small nit, if you could darkened the bushes on the left, it think that would balance the image just a little better.

The little streak in the clouds in the far right above horizon, is that a star/planet streak?

Anyway, probably one of the better images of Uluru and I've seen lots of them, love it.

Andre there's a reprocessed version on my website where I have darkened the left bushes and lightened the foreground ones. You're right that is a small startrail on the right.
