Le Conte's Sparrow

Here's a juvenile Le Conte's that was checking me out while I stayed at a lakeside cabin this summer.

The weather had turned cloudy so I used a higher ISO , but with the 40D, usually anything over 320 tends to be a bit noisy in shadow..

I have a shot of this particular bird with a clean background and perch from earlier in the day, but wanted to convey the bird in its habitat for this shot, blades of grass n' all.
I also could have cloned out the piece of grass going diagonal across the birds breast, but I chose to leave that in.

40D
100-400@400
1/500
F8
ISO 500

I thought only bittern's made this pose :-). Great catch here and the BG doesn't bother me since it's a nice habitat shot.

I really like the splayed out pose. The bird looks concerned! Nice BIH shot!

Nick,

I love how this bird appears to be peeking at you through the grass and I am glad you left the blade of grass that runs across the chest.

Very nice & appealing.

Excellent image, Nick. I really like the detail on the bird, notably the white areas. I agree with not cloning the blade of grass cutting across the breast. I feel o.k. about cloning out distractions away from the subject but cloning them when they superimpose on the subject means generating new subject pixels. The more we do that the more the image becomes what we think the bird looks like! :toast:

Everything I could hope for in a shot of this secretive species. Awesome indeed.

I like these habitat shots - very natural. I certainly wouldn't clone out that grass i think it would look artificially open if you did. Nice leg spread and the bird is sharp enough throughout. I have the same setup as you Nick and i try never to go above 400 ISO for the reasons you mention. Graham

Excellent Nick. The spread-eagle pose and the rich colors make this image for me.
