EPA 2009 - Second Honorable Mention - Fauna Gallery

I like Red deer but I love roaring red deer. My favorite Dutch mammal, especially because they are so hard to get. Very pleased with this one. It took me quite some hours in the hide but is was all worth it.

iso 200 1/10 sec. f/5.6 full frame Nikon 200-400/4 from a self build hide.

I love it! The space in this photo give a great feel of a cold morning and the deer calling his sweethearts and warning his competitors.

Beautiful image Edwin. I love the mood created by the mist and the lighting. Was this at the Veluwe? I may try a slight pano crop by cropping a bit off the bottom. This will emphasize the horizontal lines that dominate the image. Your techs make me wonder why you chose to shoot with such a slow SS :toast:

Thanks guys,

@Vincent

I always shoot at low iso. Just to get the best IQ and to reduce as much noise as possible. I learned to shoot at low iso troughout the years and I don't feel limited.

I love images that effectively combine beautiful landscapes with wildlife. All the elements come together in this great moody image. And the puff of breath is great! I'll bet a large print would be spectacular. Congratulations.

Wow, this really grabbed my attention with the thumbnail and didn't disappoint on the larger image. Very moody and dreamy. With the deer's antler showing so distinctly, it's easy to tell what one is seeing.

Edwin, I do agree completely with the priciple of that philosophy, but at 1/10sec with a long lens and a moving subject you are risking unsharpness. :wink:

You're right Vincent. But I take my chances by shooting at 8 frames/second. Also this deer was standing there for about an hour so I had plenty of chances if I should screw up.

This would be exceptional even without the deer, but the deer just makes it even more so. Great work Edwin - very deserving of the EP.

Hello Edwin,

Congrats on receiving the Second Honorable Mention out of the THOUSANDS of images posted in the Fauna Gallery in 2009. It was a real pleasure (and real easy) to nominate this image as one of the finalists!

Cheers...
