The Twaharpie mountains, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, AK. Taken after sunset from a small plane.

This is a single exposure (not a composite). Canon 40D. Canon 70-200/2.8L IS. ISO 1000. f/2.8. 1/1500 sec. Full frame, uncropped.

C&C appreciated. See LARGER IMAGE for best detail

Thanks to Carl Donohue, http://www.alaskanalpinetreks.com, for the ID on these mountains. Carl is a great guy and a rockin' photographer and guide - no better way for the non-Alaskan to see and photograph the Alaskan backcountry!

That's some amazing detail in the moon for a single exposure shot! What an amazing experience to be flying over that terrain with the full moon looming over those peaks - very nice. I might tone down the blues and purples in the snow just a tad.

Beautiful Doug!. Lots of detail when viewed larger, I'm very impressed this is one frame and taken from a plane - this one needs to be printed large!.

A classic and beautiful moonrise!
The fact that it was taken from an airplane is just amazing to me. Looks like you had an extremely fruitful journey.

What a beauty. It's got everything going for it, comp, color, detail and one lovely point of view. Looks like a shot well planned and painstakingly executed and yet you got it from a small plane. Amazing.

Impressive! Just how Alaska should be portrayed, in my opinion.

I see some pretty evident grain/noise in the larger version that should be easily reduced unless it's part of artistic decision.

Wow. Jaw-droppingly beautiful Doug. I can't believe you got this type of tight moon positioning hand-held from a plane. You brought some killer images home from this trip.

Thank you folks.

Rick, I decided to leave the WB as shot on 'cloudy', making the sky and snow naturally 'cool' toned, because I think it contrasts nicely with the warm light of the moon. Other than some contrast, NR and sharpening, I didn't feel I needed to do much color adjustment on this. I appreciate your input.

Kent, I did have to run Noise Ninja on this, but I toned it down a little, because it looks too 'smudgey' and loses detail if I remove all of it. So, the hi-res has a bit of noise visible - but it's more noticable on the larger web version due to a little heavy-handed web-sharpening. Thanks for pointing that out. I was using 2 bodies - the 5DMII with the 16-35, and the 40D with the 70-200. Sure wish I'd shot this with the 5D, as there wouldn't likely be any noise to deal with at all at this ISO. I appreciate your input.

This is just incredible, Doug. Awesome landscape. My only nit is that some of the landforms get lost in the frame. A white tooling line would be nice around the image.

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the kind words, man, I appreciate it a lot.

This is killer .. what a great flight that was. It's hard to know where to point the camera from a plane in a setting like that, but this comp is right on the money. The Twaharpies never looked so good. I love that there's still a soft glow on the peaks - so cool.

As for being helpful - it's me who owes YOU the thanks, kind sir .. after my D2x died on that trip, I'd have come home with nothing but fully charged batteries and empty CF cards if you hadn't saved my a**. So full thanks to you.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Carl

Very pleasing compositon. Nice placement of the moon. How did you handle the exposure of the moon? Best Regards.

Awesome Doug, the last touches of light on the peaks and the perfectly positioned moon make this one outstanding. Well done.

For the moon exposure, frankly, I was very lucky -- as there must've been enough thin cloud over the moon that evaluative metering of the whole scene gave the correct exposure without any adjustments. I had no idea the detail of the moon would come out so well. I didn't have time to play with alternate exposures, as you might guess.

what a great response, thank you folks.
Not sure what you mean by "the moon is stuck there" Andrey, but as I mentioned above, this is not a manipulated image, it's all captured with one exposure. ...maybe you meant something else. ...or maybe it looks like it was added - I thought people might think so, hence the disclaimer.

Please, accept my apologies for posting twice here. I just wanted to clarify my earlier comment regarding the moon being "stuck". After writing that line, I realized that it could have been taken the wrong way. Since most of the photos I have seen so far depicted moons "rolling down" a mountain, I thought that this image is unique in the sense that the Moon is stuck between two peaks. My comments were far away from hinting that the Moon has been cut and pasted on the spot.

Once again, great image.

Beautiful image, very relaxing mountain scene to look at. I like the contrast between the illuminated snow by moon light and the cold blue tones, sure is a special moment of light.
