Halloween Treat
by Michael Hardeman
Saturday's shooting was my favorite kind. An early start, not too far to drive, no people around.
I was going to photograph this one highway. Fortunately for me, I picked out the wrong highway on the map and headed there. This scene didn't present itself to me until the second time I drove by.
When I set up to shoot, it was still raining. So, I took a beach umbrella and strapped it to a tripod to shelter my camera and my film holders. I did all that for the 8x10, but shot this with the digital SLR.
In the two hours I was on this dirt road, only one car came through, and they were leaf-peepers, an old man and his wife. I was standing there with my hand on the cable release for the 8x10, holding the holder sleeve, ready to take the shot, when this guy stopped his car RIGHT IN FRONT of the camera, rolled down his window and said "awfully pretty, isn't it?". You just gotta laugh. Do these people realize what this big wooden box with the bellows extended and 5 pound lens is for? :) It never stopped raining, but that just made the light better. I'll get the 8x10 film back from the lab Monday.

36 commentsI guess I will just have to imagine what this image would look like with an 8x10 chrome on a light table. Whew! This will be a magnificent addition to your portfolio for sure. I love the color contrast between the light greens of the lichen vs. the bold and vibrant autumn colors.
I have a solution for you so folks don't stop in front of your camera. Put your tripod on the other side of the road!
Beautiful autumn image Michael.

This one does look slightly tilted cw to me but it is not a real bother.
