This African White Backed vulture was waiting it's turn while hyenas finished their grim reap
Canon 30D 400 2.8 w/1.4 extender
Thanks for any feedback.

I often enjoy the detail in these closeups Neil and this is no exception. I especially like the look at the beak and nostril. Gotta admit though that I wish I could see a larger version and knew more of your techs for critique.

Just went back and looked at the metadata for the image Ron and it was actually with a 2x extender on the 400 2.8, 1/350 at f6.7, ISO200, window mount ball head. Amboseli National Park, Kenya.

Thanks for the tech response Neil. I was mostly wondering about your aperture for DOF. I like that you've included the wing portion you have and just wondered if it (the wing) could be a little sharper, though it's not bad at all. More DOF might have had a negative effect on parts of your background anyway.
Anyway, thanks for the quick response. We're almost neighbors I see.

Very nice close-up. The only little thing that draws my eye away is the out of focus dark patch in front of the bill. Judging by what I think that being another vulture, and one of many, this would have been a tough one to nail. Love it!

Hi Neil
Welcome to NPN Avian, a wonderful place to learn & grow as a photographer.
I like this portrait, the pose of the vulture, the massive size of the bill, catchlight in the eye and the nice details.
I like the background and and the dark spot doesn't bother me.In fact it makes me dally in the frame longer as I am wondering if it is the hyena you mentioned, the prey the vulture came down for or simply a rock. Gives my imagination some thing to ponder without being obtrusive.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Nice shot Neil. I like this. Great detail and nice exposure. I really like the expression on the bird, very fitting for a vulture I think.
