Beautiful Weather

A quick post before bedtime...

An eerie, stormy sky that I just so happened to witness with my camera at hand as sunset came to an end in Chekika (part of the Everglades NP).
The image is purposely, slightly under-exposed and the vignetting here is a natural effect.

Canon 40D
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 (blah, blah, blah)
ISO 100
1.5 sec @ f/11
tripod & shutter release cable

Wow--this is beautiful. The vignetting adds a nice, natural artistic effect. I'm curious when you took this. I was in the Everglades for sunset tonight and didn't see anything like this. Where in the park is Chekika?

Like Scott said, my first thought is "wow." This is fantastic. Hard to go wrong with a sunset like that, but I very much like the leafless tree and its placement in the frame. It all comes together nicely.

Sweet one Rick, single trees always lend themselves to great comps like this.

What a sky, like it very much. Really like the natural vignetting effect you got, well done.

What a lightshow. Great. :toast: I also like the way you present the tree silhouette in a roughly 1/3-1/3 position.

Fantastic, powerful image. I might be tempted to crop a little off the bottom.

Compelling cloud formation and color, and the tree silhouette sets it off nicely.

Rick... at first I thought this looked pretty artificial, but it is growing on me. The sky seems to explode from the tree, it is a really dynamic image. the vignetting seems strong, but if that is the way the sky looked...wow! Its a powerful image...

Fantastic Rick! What an intense sky and sunset. The combination of the silhouette and natural vignetting really put this over the top. Not sure if this fits or not, but one of my first thoughts was of the movie "Gone with the Wind." Anyway, this is awesome!

The light is great, but the clouds look pretty awesome too. There are some nice shapes and textures hiding in the light.

Great, simple, dramatic shot. I like how the lines in the clouds seem to extend out from the tree like an explosion.

Thanks for all the great comments guys! :wavey:

Scott,
I took this back in the beginning of September (I think that's right). Definitely nothing like this last night.
Chekika is about 6 miles west of Krome Avenue and 168 Street... I got myself lost in the vacant lands that are just to the east of the national park boundary. To be 100% honest, it's not my favorite part of the park. I feel like I waste my time whenever I go out there. I got lucky on this evening though.
Oh and if there's ever a big wild fire out there, that's a good time to go (after the fire). There are some sweet rock formations that would otherwise be covered by saw grass.

Reed,
I'm not big on making stuff up... This is what I saw. Granted it did look darker to my eye. The shot I took after this one was a bit brighter with the vignetting less pronounced. What I liked most about it was the fact that it did look surreal, like a painting. There was a clearing in the sky to my left allowing just enough sunset light into the image giving me these great colors.
This was one of those rare skies, where everything worked out great. I probably won't see another one like this for a good while.

What an explosion of color. Not sure if the scene has a natural vignette or if you added it, but regardless I like it. The tree is nicely positioned and in the large version is looks very crisp. Nice shot

I Like the moody effect of this impressive sky, and lonely tree silhouette. On the right spot to shoot to the tree with such light Rick. Well done!
