I came across this Steller's Jay at the refuge. Soaking up some mid-day sun while perched in a maple tree. I like the colors captured in this one.

Craig, I really like the colors also. The eye contact, the bird puffed up, the focus on this little guy is fantastic. Great photography!

The bg is a bit busy for my taste, but the colors of fall against the blue on the bird are very nice! I never noticed the blue on the Stellar's forehead before. Cool. Why the high f stop? Just curious.

Hi Mike,
For awhile I had a tendancy to shoot to low an f stop and lots of images had parts of subjects OOF. I guess I was looking for as much DOF as possible.

Hi Craig,
I'm also stepping my f-stop up for the same reason, also if sometime the BG is a little busy. I like this Jay, the pose and the color are great!
Wonderful capture.

Nice fluffed up pose Craig and I like the head turn and eye contact. Sharpness on the bird looks good. Lots of stuff going on in the background as has been mentioned.

Craig,
I like the fluffed up pose, the colors, details & sharpness of the jay and the great head turn it gave you.
I think if you had been at f7.1 to f8 the whole bird would have been in focus and most of the background would have been more OOF. I don't really mind the background as is though. I like the fall colors, the maple seeds and the slight curve to the branch the jay is perched on.

Craig, you got a nice fluffed up pose with good detail. I think you could have opened up a little more, but I like the shot as posted--the colors and shapes in the background are nice.

The bird looks really good Craig. The BG is a bit busy for me, but hey, you can't them to go where you want all the time.
