Tricolor in Environment
by Bill Leggett
Shot mid-September in Bayou Sauvage NWR. I was a little surprised that this turned out to be acceptable given the slow shutterspeed. Could have done without the deadfall at the top RHS, but that's the environment they choose, and impossible to reposition from the boardwalk.
Olympus E-3, ZD 300 +EC20, Wimberley I, ISO 400, 1/125 f5.7, 0.0EV, early (6:45am) light somewhat subdued by the boardwalk on the east (left) side of me.

9 commentsI don't mind the deadfall at all, it is simply a part of this heron's environment.
I love the heron's pose with the one raised leg, the colors, details and your choice of comp.
Very appealing image as posted.

Nice environment shot and the heron gave you a good pose. I like the lifted foot and the lighting on the beak.
Luke, I'm happy to say that Tricolors are quite common in south Louisiana, and lucky for me since they are my favorite of the long-legged waders. It's also fortunate that the juveniles, like other species, have not yet learned to fear humans, not the case with the adults in my experience.
Rick, I should have qualified by saying that this is a juvenile. They are not only lighter, but the colors have much more intermixed brown than the distinctive cobalt blue-grey they acquire as adults.
Thanks again - Bill
