Red Deer in Scotland on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula Western Scotland.

I had lying in the undergrowth for over an hour light was fading quickly and the stag came out of the woodland just in front of me and I got this shot

Canon 50D, Canon 300mm f2.8 lens, f2.8 !/350sec ISO 650

Hi Ron,

Nice deer and I know that you worked hard on getting this shot! You might think about making it a vertical shot and taking off some of the foreground. Thanks for sharing.

I, too, like how he stands out. I also agree that a vertical might be a nice improvement.

Hi Ron,

Looks to me like you had a very high contrast situation to deal with here - and it also looks to me like you handled it well! The deer really stands out well. While I see the logic of going vertical as the others have suggested, given the size of the subject within the frame I'm not sure it would actually work in this case (i.e., it would require too much of a crop). Instead, I'd suggest experimenting with a crop off the bottom, starting with removing about 1/2 of the green out-of-focus vegetation (and thus pulling the buck's head off the vertical midpoint of the image.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...
