Winter Silence - WC#410

When I captured this image, I was afraid to take a step fearing that I'd disturb the snow and cause some to fall from the trees. If you've ever been in a nice snowy environment (and I'm sure many of you have), the silence is deafening. That was the way this image was, absolutely no sounds anywhere. I wish I could bottle that environment and sell it

This is an old image from my files, but I still like it.

Canon 20D, 28-135 @ 70mm, ISO 100

Thanks for your thoughts.

The larger version sure shows a lot more detail for this one.

Not to take anything away from the rest of the composition, but what I think I like most, even though it's a minor feature, is the form of the snow around the tree trunk in the foreground, piled up on the left and slightly absent on the right.

You certainly achieved the feeling of stillness with this image.
Beautiful, Keith!

I grew up in Valdez, Alaska where we average over 300 inches per winter and have exceeded 900 inches in one season. I am very familiar with the amazing dampening capabilities of fresh deep snow so I can really appreciate what you're talking about. I really like your choice of composition and the texture of the snot. Very nice!

Larger image makes the bark on the tree look normal, boy is that tree loaded. The image does convey stillness, but it's like a cocked gun, some tree is not going to be able to handle the snowload and dump or shed some branches with a resounding crack. So for me having been attacked by an evil sugar pine on a snow shoot this image conveys a tension waiting for that event to occur. Just personal experience, but it's quiet right now.

I love the silence you speak of after a fresh snow fall. I also appreciate the fact that the vast majority of people stay in and the normally crowded parks are mine alone. The image captures the essence of those days in its simplicity.

Nice! The larger version realy brings out the texture and detail in the snowy leaves. I could also see this as a b&w.

Fascinating shot! I can relate, hope to see some of this tomorrow morn. The large version looks great, smaller one could use a bit more sharpening. :wavey:
