Here comes my first post in this gallery. A lone male fox feels confident of being around me and another fellow photographer, at about 2500 meters of altitude in the Gran Paradiso National Park, northwestern Italian Alps, on mid September 2009. It was raining hard and also hailing at some point. Nikon D3, 14-24/2.8, ISO 200, 1/640, f/5.

Comments and critiques welcome.

Woah, you photographed this with a 14-24? Hope the fox wasn't rabid. . . amazing shot and I love the inclusion of the vast habitat as well as the "casual" look of the fox scratching itself.

Love the shot! The background and all the colors help to make this a great shot. You were really close!

Great shot with an even greater subject, love to see some different poses from the fox but this one works quite well. Good light here also. Ron

Thank you all for the comments ! Yes, I was quite close, foxes in the Alps (especially in protected areas) are becoming very confident, sometimes too much - and this goes to their damage sooner or later. And, raby has not been an issue in this part of Europe, at least in the last few decades. As for the light... I tried to keep the dark and stormy atmosphere we were immersed in...

Hello Antonello,

Welcome to the NPN Fauna Gallery - I hope this post is only the first of many we see from you as it's a very good addition (to say the least).

I like your composition here and your exposure looks absolutely spot-on on my monitor - those clouds are great. The detail is great (no surprise with that lens and camera!) and when I first saw this image I thought pretty much the same as Luke - you must have been amazingly close. I'm quite a fan of animalscapes and this one is very strong. I have to admit that the fox's pose/behaviour, while interesting, seems almost incongruous with the power and strength of the beautiful environment (I like behavioural shots, but think this image would be stronger if the fox was simply staring into the distance without scratching itself). But overall a great first post!

Thanks for sharing this - I hope this is only the first of many posts you contribute to the Fauna Gallery!

Hello Brad,
thanks for your comment and the welcome! I see what you say regarding the pose of the fox, and fully agree - on the other hand, in some way I did also like the contrast between the grand scene of nature around and the mundane flea-scratching of the fox... I have many other pictures of this little companion (I filled a 4-Gb card...), I attach another one that I like a lot - and plan to put in the portfolio when I'll be brave enough to prepare it...

All the best,

Both of these shots are what many of us look for: interesting animal image well placed in its environment.

Its not often you have the opportunity to photograph wildlife at this close range and use a wide angle to capture the animal in its habitat. This/these are fantastic shots of just that! Love both of them :toast:

Outstanding shots, I like both of the posts. The composition, clouds and very cooperative animal really make these images, way to go!
