Northern Harrier

Confession: I've become somewhat obsessed with photographing harriers in flight during winter, which must be obvious because I post so many of them. I think it's because of a combination of factors - their beauty, my fascination with their behaviors and the fact that I have access to a few of them. But it's also because of the difficulties involved in photographing them well. Getting close is often a challenge, as is getting light in their deeply set eyes especially when they're looking straight down as they nearly always do when hunting. Case in point: yesterday I took 32 gigs of images (almost 1200 shots with the 7D), mostly of harriers. Out of that number I may have a half dozen images that I quite like. This is one of them.

7D, 1/1600, f/7.1, ISO 400, 500 f/4 (no tc), shot from pickup window, cropped to 51% of original image, not baited

Comments/critique appreciated

Ron,

I'd love to see the ones you quite don't like. . .

One of your best Harrier Shots, the lighting on the eye is particularly wonderful. Aside from Red-Tailed Hawks and Ospreys, these are the most frequent birds I see, but they rarely give me chances like this and I guess you had a fun New Year's Eve sorting through 1200 shots haha. I know you took this in 2009, but don't forget to change your copyright as I just processed a few images from today before I realized it's 2010

Great shot, Ron. I couldn't get this shot with ten thousand images. Your capture of the face and eye is particularly nice. :toast:

Ron,

This is an exceptionally well done image of this harrier, it took my breath away when I first looked at it. The light, pose, details, and sharpness are all great, plus we have a lovely view of the clear, sharp eye!

The light under the wings was probably enhanced some by the snow on the ground and just makes the details there sing.

Stunning :toast:

It seems that no matter how many thousands of photos you can take in a day, there is always one that is a favorite. That one wouldn't have happened if you only took a few. The way I see it, if a bird is willing to cooperate and let you take photos you should keep going until one of you is worn out. There is always that one photo out of thousands that shines above the rest even from your group of 4 or 5 "keepers".

On another note, I don't have your Harrier shots Ron, but I know where they are and I'm gonna get me some. Just to let you know I'm gunnin' for ya'. You set the bar pretty high though. This one is particularly crisp. Just sayin' :toast: :toast:

Oh brother, this is nice. Wonderful clarity and I can see the detail in every feather. May I ask how you sharpened this, there must be some special sauce you are using to get this incredible look and feel. :toast: I should post the little speck (for laughs) I photographed in flight today, it too was a Northern Harrier.

Thanks Gary, no sauce and no secrets though. Only USM.

I don't "get it" as to how you capture this species the way you do. My attempts are mostly laughable. This one is incredibly sharp Ron.... You set the bar with raptor flight shots on NPN. :toast:

A super exposure on this one Ron. The lighting is just perfect, which is so hard to do. I can see all the details in the feathers around the face and to me that is the hardest thing to get in harriers. This tells me this is tack sharp and close. Very well done.

Thank you for letting us know that you don't get one of these incredible shots every time you click the shutter, Ron! At least it encourages me to keep trying! Wonderful capture. Great obsession.

I really enjoy the harriers too. Like this image. I do notice though that they are a little slow in flight, which helps in tracking.
