carstic landscape

The landscape of the upper Ellero valley, located in the maritime Alps in northwestern Italy. This area is one of the few carstic regions of the western Alps. It is characterized by the presence of many deep and very extended caves which have been thoroughly explored only in recent times. The photo was taken in late August of 2008, using a 4x5 camera with APO Symmar 150/5.6 and Velvia 50 - one of my few excursions in large-format-land, at least until now...

What a beautiful landscape Antonello. The yellows and blues contrast so beautifully, and the clouds are like rocks in the sky. Some of the blues appear a little oversaturated for my taste.

Very nice landscape, with perfect colours combination. The sky seems a bit oversaturated IMHO, but not a big issue.

Antonello,

Time to get out the 4x5 a little bit more now, no? This is a great mountain landscape; I really like your composition, the proportion of sky and how the foreground balances nicely with the background. The only nit I have has been mentioned by Floris - I think the blue sky is a little saturated. You could desat the blue a little and perhaps even play with the hue slider as well. It's a minor correction though, you've crafted a lovely scene.

Thanks for the comments! And yes, I realize now that the blues are oversaturated... I enclose a new version where I decreased the blue saturation and did modify the hue a bit.
As for 4x5... yes, I think the time has come to take it out from the closet again....

The way that the colors immediately betray the Velvia probably would have gone completely unnoticed at some point in the past. When one is used to viewing photos that originated in digital, it's almost disappointing to have the colors be so influenced by the recording media. It's a situation that can be easily accommodated if desired, and it's my only complaint against a well designed photograph.

edit: I just noticed your update, and I definitely think it takes steps toward addressing exactly what I referenced in my comment. It's a good adjustment, and I think there are more to me made.

The blue sky, white clouds, and yellow grass really work well together. A very nice shot. I agree about the blue being a little too blue, but the repost is better.
