(c) Cliffhanger
by Jorne de Bruin
This will be my last image from Spain for a while, so I thought it would appropriate to end with one of my favourite images from the trip. Got a small chance to photograph this Lynx while she was standing on the ledge, so I took it and hoped for the best! In the end I do feel this might have been better with slightly more room at the left side of the image (to emphasise the looking direction of the Lynx) and some more on the bottom (to avoid the clipped paw) but in the end i'm still very satisfied given the brief window I had for this shot.
Also I will be going to Germany again to photograph Wolves and Lynx in the snow next week, so I won't be around to post or comment then. This will be the first serious workout for my new Canon equipement so I´m very excited! (I moved from Sony to Canon over the last few months)
Sony a700 & 300mm f2.8 + 1.4 TC @ f5.6, iso 1600 & 1/200th. Used some of TK's actions/masks in PS.
note that (c) means this image contains a captive animal

13 commentsApt title, stunning colors and great detail ! This is such a great angle as well, her looking away makes this one pensive/moody.
I bet it was amazing to witness this! My two thoughts when I first saw it were the clipped paw, and more room on the left, both nits you addressed already. Everything else is perfect! I love his expression. Do you know what he was looking at? Have fun in Germany, I'm sooooo jealous! Good luck with Canon (its better!

just excellent and inspirational. I like the background for contrast too. Kudos!!

Appropriate title on this one! I think this is a good shot and very close to an EXCELLENT shot, but not quite there. I agree with your own self-critique and would summarize it by saying simply that this image is too tightly framed for my liking (perhaps with the 300 mm alone you would have been better off). Simply backing off, opening up a little more space on the left side and getting the lynx to adjust its gaze by only a few degrees (to capture a hint of the eye) and you've have had a great shot! Oh yeah, and if the image were mine I'd do some work on the colour/brightness of that out-of-focus grassy slope in the background (both the one leading right to the head of the lynx and the area just above the trees) - it looks very unnatural and distracting (to my eye). Overall, really close on having a great shot here!
I'm looking forward to seeing how you make out with your new gear...good luck with it!
Cheers...

Brad: Agree with your comment about the 300mm alone, I was so pleased with my TC's that I rarely took them off, which resulted in a lot of 'alomst' images. It is one of the reasons why I went with the 7D, I'd rather use a slightly shoter lens on a high mp body as to give me a lot of cropping power, insted of using tc's. I feel this gives more freedom while still resulting in very high res. files. Proves once again that longer is not always better
