Northern Junco With Repost

I thought I would try my luck photographing some yard birds yesterday seeing that we had some rare sunshine. I'm a little underpowered when it comes to avian photography so I set up a blind by the bird feeders and waited. This is a male slate colored Northern Junco with a female in the shallow DOF BG.
AV Prioity with tripod, 1/500 sec, F7.1, EX Comp -1/3, ISO 100, Canon 70-300 @300.
Thanks for looking and all C&C welcomed.
Large version added.

John, I am envious, I have been trying to get a good well exposed shot of a junco such as yours, w/o sucess! I think it is alittle close to the edge of the photo, and when I first looked at this shot I did not notice the female in the BG. However, I hope I can get as good a shot. Thank you for posting.

Thanks for including the larger version as it makes evaluating the image a lot easier. Detail is excellent as is exposure. Getting close is always a good idea, even when it requires a blind and a feeding station.

FYI - the current name is Dark-eyed Junco for all forms including slate-colored. You must still have a copy of Peterson's from the early 80's!

Good exposure and pose. I like the grass and snow foreground, but find the background a bit distracting.

Nice, John. Good detail, nice work on the exposure of the blacks and whites, and good choice of DOF. I'd like a little more room to the left of the bird, but comp choices are a lot more subjective. Richard mentioned hte name issue...

Nice job on the techs John. For my taste this is cropped too tight.

Thanks everyone for your input. I cropped this post quite a bit so I have some room to work with. Here's the same photo with a little more room around it.
Richard: I just checked my Peterson, Your right copyright 1986, looks like I need to make a trip to the bookstore.
