Crimson-rumped Toucanet

This bird came in very close to the blind at Paz de las Aves near Mindo, Ecuador on our recent trip, lured there by the bananas that Angel had put out. It was way to close to get the full body in so I shot a portrait. About 85% of frame, a bit of nr applied to the bg.

Lovely image. I like that the slightly open beak gives definition to both the upper and lower mandible. I'm impressed with the sharpness-especailly at 1/40.. He must have really sat still for you.

Yes, the detail is wonderful here Nate. I agree with Angela about the nice effect from the space between the mandibles.

Nate the colors of this bird are quite lovely and the background works very well with them. I like the comp you picked as it feels well balanced with the long bill of the toucanet.

The details & sharpness are especially evident in the larger version, thank you for providing it for our enjoyment.

I especially love the look at the eye and the amazing view of the upper and lower mandible.

This is an amazing view of the upper and lower mandible and tack sharp eye, with great feather detail. Very complimentary colors in the BG and your comp make this a winner IMO.

super detail on a stunning bird, Nate. comp-wise I might want just a bit more body to balance that great big bill. :toast:

Cool bird Nate. I like the comp. Sharpness is great. Wish there was some fill flash, but still a great capture without it. How big are these birds compared to say a keel-billed toucan?

Thanks for your comments everyone!

Bryan, this is a smaller bird compared to the Keel-billed Toucan, it's about 14 inches (35cm), the Keel-billed is about 19-20 inches on average. Flash is not allowed in this particular reserve, it is allowed the majority of places in Ecuador.

The sharpness and detail here combined, with the colors and the matching background are so very attractive here, Nate. The ISO 1000 setting doesn't detract from it at all and I don't miss the absence of fill flash. I really like how you've cropped this image too. :toast:

Wow! This is my favorite of your recent posts (a more accurate statement would be that it is my favorite of your posts that I have viewed recently).
I'm viewing the image on my laptop in a motel room that has a very slow internet connection. I watched the large image come up on my screen line by line. I like every line of the large image. :toast:
