Another one from my first day with my new 500. If I had decreased the aperture a little a may have gotten that tail in focus, too. From window with beanbag.

That's a beauty Sharon. Well done.

Whatever the light source is to the right it does a wonderful job of illuminating the breast with a warm glow. Wish we had these beauties around here.

Congrats on the new lens! Looks like your putting it to good use. Nice job keeping the eyes in focus and the details sharp. Not too easy to do at 1/160sec. :toast:

Sharon, I love the colors in this female cardinal. The BG really sets the bird off nicely and the perch tree colors go really well with the bird and the BG bringing it all together. You were already pretty slow at 1/160s so closing up even more really was not an option, as with the 50D you would not have wanted to go above ISO 400 given the noise that would produced. You did well with your techs here IMO.

Really nice, Sharon. I can see that you will be a force to be reckoned with having that new lens. It seems that the majority of the sharp focus is in front of the bird as the perch is pretty sharp on the left side, while the feet of the bird are soft. I would try to focus farther back a little more to get more of the bird in sharp focus. If you had increased the aperture your shutter speed would have dropped pretty low. :toast:

Sharon,

I like the light in this image and I like the bird's pose.

You really didn't have much of a choice about aperture given the slow shutter speed, but I don't mind her tail not being in focus.

Very nice image - I don't have any problem with the DOF on the tail here in such a fine shot.

Gee, this is a beauty. Looks like you are really making the most of the new lens! I really like the composition, nicely balanced bird/perch. The simple taupe coloration of the background and perch suits the bird to a tee and allows the subtle oranges of the bird to have more impact. I don't mind the tail not being totally in focus.
