The cardinal itself is as-shot (through a window, so not super sharp), but the background and branch were treated with the watercolor artistic filter in Photoshop.

Really like this image. With the background artistry you don't need the bird sharper. Just great as is.

This is fabulous, Pete! Beautiful work. I think a small crop from the top and right would bring more attention to the bird. As is, it'll just have to do for a magazine cover.
