This is the same bird as my last post very soon after taking off from a "telephone/power" pole. It is pretty tattered due to skirmishes with a Peregrine Falcon. I observed this happening twice that afternoon when the Peregrine would give chase as soon as the Gyr took off.

Unfortunately, these pole perches have wires and one of the OOF wires cut across part of its tail and top wing trailing edges. So, I took to the dark side and cloned it out because I liked this pose best of the few I got of this bird in flight. Hence, I am posting this instead of one that did not require cloning. Please excuse me this one time - it seemed worth while 'saving'!

1D3, 500mm Handheld, 1/5000 @ f5.6, ISO800, afternoon light.

Thanks for looking; C & C please.

KC,

Congrats on a stunning flight shot! Truly, this is better than ANY of my flight shots of the Gyr (ok, except for the ones w/prey  ) I really like the unique pose (Tail down, wings/head up) and the tattered look. Poor Gyr, you'd think it would hold its own against the Peregrine

Is this a crop?

Kwan, I think I can save those Lawrence's here 'til April, but you'll have to bring this bird with you. Deal? Awesome, KC. :toast: :jump:

He looks like a real warrior coming back from a mission, tattered and beaten but still flying. Exquisite detail and an awesome pose. The pale blue sky is a splendid background for his coloration. Congratulations! :toast:

A rarely seen and wonderful pose. It's possible to count each single feather of the bird.

Awesome shot KC. Cloning forgiven. the details are great and the pose and eye contact really add. I like the tattered look. You see so many images of nature looking "perfect." This shows how it really is. A tough world out there.

Hugely neat shot Kwan. I actually like the reality of the "tattered look", esp for a species such as this. I'd give a lot for an opportunity with one of these. I also very much identify with your apparent agonizing over whether or not to clone. Been there... Wiill be again...
