Here's another image from Sani Lodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon. There's usually a few of this species directly behind the lodge which hang out and pick off insects. They are fun to watch and photograph. This is full frame, I cloned one small bright spot in the bg.

MkIII 500F4 1.4X 1/60 F8, iso 800, evaluative metering -0.3, 580ex Fill flash at -1.7, Gitzo tripod

Thanks Rich, I agree I probably should have cropped that bit out. :wavey:

Good shot of a very handsome bird Nate. Your use of fill flash is just right IMO. I too would would crop out that little bit of leaf detail at the bottom.

Really a beautiful background Nate and it sets the bird off like a gem.

Great work on the comp and the dof. I love the bokeh. I'd probably try to clone the bottom since you might need that room but that may be tough but you could probably crop it as well.

Nate:
As others have already stated, the detail in the blacks is just outstanding. It is a striking bird with the contrast i colors between beak and feathers. How large is this bird?

Wonderful bird and well taken, Nate! I'd remove those bottom OOF bits, too.

Great detail, nice pose, great color, Nate. I'd be tempted to lower the exposure on that light green "hat" the bird is wearing. :toast:

A wild name for this bird - another great flash execution. The detail really is great as is the composition with the perch cutting across the frame.

Really like this Nate. Great use of flash where you've captured detail but still retained the closed in feel of the forest. Cool bird as well

cheers

Very nice full frame shot Nate. Good feather detail showing within the dark bird, well done all the way around.

Great looking bird, Nate. Looks a bit like the Dollarbird here. I like the detail and techs here. Nice setting too. :toast:

Another very good shot. I would have liked to see more blur in the background, but this is a minor point.
