Mountain Chickadee + REPOST

Still trolling in the archives as the rain continues.

This mountain chickadee was from a trip to Oregon. I'd never seen one before this little guy showed up and had to look it up when I got back to our camper.

I've been unsure about the composition of this one. Tried various formats and came back to square because of the head being angled down. The image is cropped at both sides and the top taking out more of the same OOF BG. What do you think?

1D2, 100-400 @ 400, ISO 400, 1/250 @ f8.

Thanks for looking.

The composition looks fine to me, Ed. You had a choice of showing more or less of the perch. It's an interesting perch and adds to the image interest. Strange looking chickadee: looks like a bad haircut. :toast:

THe square crop works for me, although it might look better as a vertical with more perch on the bottom.

The whites on the nape are overexposed IMO and it seems a bit oversharpened as presented.

Ed, I like the feeling of this image. The BG really makes this one for me as it brings out the mood for me. Great eye contactand perch. I think you could bring down the exposure of the entire image just a bit and then work on the whites on the bird's neck to get this just right. This image is worth working with a bit more IMO.

I like the comp and the blurred background as well as the birds pose. It does seem just a touch oversharpened to my eyes.

Great shot Ed. We get these in our back yard often and I have yet to get a good shot of one. They never stop moving for long. Well done.

Cute pose on a great perch. I like the crop as you posted it. Somehow it fits just right. I guess I agree the whites are just a bit hot but otherwise I love the shot, Ed.

Nice detail, background and inquisitive look Ed. Sorry, can't help with comp. i have a few shots like this and I'm still to come up with an appropriate solution.

NIcely done Ed. I like the pose and background and your composition works just fine for my tastes. I agree with the two nits mentioned by Rich but those issues are easily solved. A much nicer image than any I have of the species.

With the nice perch and great BG for the Chickadee, I think several crops would work, but I like it as posted.

Ed,

I like the comp as presented but I can see where this would also make a lovely vertical presentation. The chicadee stands out very nicely from the muted colors in the background. I like the pose & head angle of the chickadee too.

I think this appears slightly over sharpened but that may be partly due to the effect of the high contrast straight line zig-zags in the white lines of the primaries and on the tail.

I like the curves in the lines of the perch and I especially like how the feathers on top of the bird's head are raised.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm a little slow getting this repost up because of spending too much time watching the olympics - we don't get to host them often!

I've darkened the whites a little selectively and also toned the whole image down a bit too. Hope this helps. As for the sharpening I used only very little on the original post so didn't use any on this one. Does that work? My eyes aren't acute enough to see the difference any more.

This shot was also made under very harsh sunlight which makes contrast control a real challenge.

Thanks.
