I live at 5000 feet elevation in Central Montana, in the foothills of the Big Snowy Mountains. The snow buntings show up at my feeders in the worst winter weather.
D90, 300mmf4, 1/250, iso 320, f11, natural light, tripod, through a window.
Thanks for looking. All comments appreciated.

What a great photo. I love the bit of ice on his beak. Just a bit of halo around his head.

Wish one would show at my feeders! Nice detail here with good exposure and colors. I see the halo, too, otherwise a nice capture! Sharon

Dan,

Love the snow on the beak and the "happy" look on this bunting. I too see the small halo around the head.

Thanks for the comments. I can not see the halo. Maybe because my monitor is not calibrated?

Great detail Dan,especially the larger version. I love these birds and this is a great shot of this species. Your exposure looks good and the sharpness is right on IMO. Halo already mentioned. Overall, very nice

What a neat little bird. Nice colors and details, especially for shooting through a window! The halo isn't too distracting and I only saw it because it was pointed out. Well done. :toast:

Dan,

I absolutely love that you got this image with snow on the bird's bill. Some folks take to cleaning things up like that but I really appreciate seeing the snow and it connects me more with the bunting having it there.

Love the alert looking pose, the light in the eye and the snowy setting.

I see the halo too. I'd work on that and then print this!

The snow on the beak is great as well as on his feet. I think the detail is great as well

I really like the ice on the beak that's the element that makes this photo for me. It looks nice and crisp for through the window as well. :toast:

A great yard bird, and a very nice image.

The slight halo is likely from sharpening, and I doubt if your monitor calibration has anything to do with you not being able to see it. A good way to avoid this problem is to de selective sharpening by first making a good selection of just he bird, with a soft edge to the selection. I always use the Quick Select tool in CS 3 to get started on my selection, and I do this on a duplicate layer so I adjust it afterwards with a mask and with the opacity slider for the layer.

Really a nice image Dan, amazing that you got this IQ shooting through glass. Pose and plumage detail are really good and I love that snow on the top of the bill. I too see the halo and for me they are an issue for web presentation, just like any other presentation - and especially for critique. That said, this one should be an easy fix with selective sharpening - just as Rich suggested.

I've only seen this species once. No, I don't have an image - keeper or not. I'd love to have this in my files.
