Juvenile Bald Eagle
by Kumar Patel
I think the designation of our national bird truly belongs to the Bald Eagle. Even the "teenager" is majestic.
Photo taken in January, 2010 at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland.
Nikon D3, Nikon 600mm with 1.4X teleconverter, f/8.0, 1/400, ISO 400.
Thank you for your interest.

12 commentsI have fond memories of Blackwater - it was one of the first places we branched out from NJ to see birds on our own, and we saw our Life Bald Eagles at Blackwater on April 30, 1980. But nothing as close as this!
Very nice! It's great seeing these at Blackwater...and am hoping to get down there soon! Sharon

I love all the phases of plumages that bald eagles go through before reaching adulthood and this one is wonderful. You have exceptionally lovely detail in the bird and in the branch it is perched on.
I can see some cloning artifacts next to the lower edge of the bird's wing on the right side of the frame, just above the branch. I would clean that up if this were mine as it is such a fine image and give a little more space above the eagle's head to balance the comp more.
Love the light in this image.
