I chased this raven across a suburban shopping mall and finally got a shot at him while he was perched on top of a snow bank. Stark contrast of black and white made exposure difficult. No sharpening applied except to eye and some feathers on neck. Image lightened with Levels tool. No noise reduction.

1/500 sec at f/11
500mm, ISO 400

Nice exposure - black and white is tough!

Hilke,

I like the pose of the Raven, the snowy setting and the detail you were able to bring out in the dark feathers. There is some purply-red fringing at the edge of the tail, bill chest and top of the head, I am not sure if that was in the original file or if it was produced in post processing, but I would work on that because it detracts slighty from an otherwise fine image.

I like the size and placement of the Raven in the frame, the head angle is neat. I might darken the entire photo just a tad. That beak looks weird, elongated and thin. (What's with all the beak defects, I'm seeing them here all the time and in my own little world as well...

)

Thanks all for your comments. I was very fortunate that I had my camera in my car when this bird came along. It reminded me again to dial in the appropriate EV in such extreme light situations.
