I shot this photo at Choke Canyon State park. I like the alert pose and the way the BG shows off the antlers. I just wish he was a 12 pointer. Originally shot on slide film and converted to digital.

Nikon F3 with nikkor MF 300/2.8 and TC 14.

Thanks for any comments.

Great poe! Seems pretty washed out on this monitor - would some sat increase help?

Nice pose of a superb buck! I think you can enhance this with some selective contrast boost on the deer and maybe apply a noise reduction to some of the background. Also, based on the color of the foreground vegetation, you might be able to raise the color warmth slightly.

Good looking buck Robert, nice head turn. I see the other comments regarding saturation.
I generally shoot with my white balance set on auto. This looks like it was overcast?
I would've tried adjusting the WB in raw for cloudy here, might've helped warm it up a bit.

Great capture! I agree with the other comments on the photo being a bit washed. Definitely needs the saturation boosted.

HI Robert,

Poses don't get much better than this! Good choice of in going with the vertical composition and your placement of the buck in the frame suits my taste perfectly. I agree that the colours and contrast could probably be bumped up a tad, but that's an easy adjustment. Finding the White Balance control on your F3 would be something harder to do. Kidding aside, a slight bump in warmth might be in order - shot with Ektachrome? Almost looks like it to me (as opposed to Velvia), but sometimes colour shifts happen during scanning...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this fine specimen.

Brad

PS: Honest question: Up here (in Canada) this would be a 3-point buck (possibly 4, but I'd have to measure that fourth nubbin) - do you count all the points on BOTH antlers down there? And here I was thinking we just had small deer/elk up here when I was hearing all about 10 point bucks when the biggest elk I ever saw was a 9-pointer (= 18 total points on both antlers).

Good shot! Love the clarity and detail. There is a little noise in the background on my screen. Thanks for sharing!

Here is a repost of the shot. I made a few adjustments as per recommendations. Hope it looks better.

Brad,

This was originally shot on Kodachrome 64. I have lots of nice slides but my success converting them to digital has been pretty inconsistent . Some scans turn out very well and others kind of suck even when I have a good slide. I asked about it in a question on the NP discussion forum a week or so ago and got some good information. I hope to buy a scanner pretty soon to do my own scans and get everything worked out.

As to your antler question I have heard the same animal described as a 12 pointer, a 6 pointer and a 6 by 6. I think down here (in Texas) most people refer to the total number of points, i. e. a 12 pointer but I'm not a hunter (except with a camera) so I don't know for sure.

The repost looks a lot better Robert, but even IMO it can use even a bit more contrast. (I downloaded the image and tried.) Excellent pose and nice eye level angle.

F3 and a 300/2.8 with a TC14 ... awesome. Still, it looks soft. Tht could have been the scan. In any case, a change in color balance might be in order.

Pete D. still has and F3, but there is a problem with the LCD
