Red-eyed tree frog

by Richard Bernabe

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted March 15, 2010316 views10 comments
Canon EOS 5D mkII
Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro

Monkey River, Belize

I chose an extremely shallow DOF @ f4 to emphasize the in-focus eye (the critter's most dominant feature) plus I wanted a smooth, even-colored BG. The low-light conditions made this approach a practical one as well. Does the very shallow DOF work? Or does it bother you that no part of the frog is in focus besides the eye?

Thanks,

Richard

These little guys are among the most beautiful things nature has to offer, and it's the eyes that really makes them stand out. So for that reason, your decision sits very well with me. This is a very appealing shot and the shallow DOF gives it a lot of personality.

DOF works fine here - I like the surrounding softness

DOF is perfect. The eyes have it.

Nice color. I like how the shallow DOF leads right to the red eye. You accomplished the intended effect very well. Nicely done. :toast:

Now, that is a red eye. Amazing. I love the depth of field and the composition.

I love the shallow DOF Richard, it gives the image a very artistic feel. That said I also would have loved to see an image with maximum DOF as a comparison before I would give my final 'consent'. What I suspect namely is that a deep DOF could make the leaf a great leading line, something that is a bit lost with such a shallow DOF. Totally loose form the DOF, I must add that he composition is simply perfect. :toast:

Hi Richard :wavey: This presentation makes me think of Rules are made to be broken"darwin wigget"or thinking sideways."freeman patterson".I am quite sure you are aware of these rules, but want to stimulate thought.on this forum. But being editor-in- chief. will you get some unbiased criticism? To me, its an almost abstract rendition. And the shallow DOF makes this image very creative. not like a documentation.
