Frosted Aspens v.2

by Alex Mody

Gallery: LandscapePosted March 18, 2010308 views33 comments
Hey,

I shot this scene in December 2008, in Utah's Manti-La Sal National Forest. I originally preferred the vertical composition (http://www.alexmody.com/photo/frostedaspens/), and forgot about this one, but I'm now not so sure about that.

D300, 70-200mm at 200mm. ISO 100, 1/3sec, f/22

Thanks for looking and commenting!

They're both splendid, well seen and executed. This is great, I absolutely love the frosted branches and trunks against the darker background.

Both are great Alex, but the vertical definitely wins my heart. It seems a little more organized, and the crystallized branches stand out more for some reason.

There's both really beautiful. I wouldn't want to have to choose.

I love it! The contrast against the dark background really makes this photo. I slightly prefer the vertical version for the snow on the bottom border.

Frosted branches and a dark bg, it looks great. Very well done. I guess I like the vert image a little better, but think they are both really nice.

This is just a little bit of wonderful. Great light and lines with good separation from the background.

Dang. Those are both incredible photographs. I don't think that I could pick one over the other. They both work very well in their respective formats. I really like the oh-so-subtle color palette, with the tiny hint of evergreen in the shadows. Very unique, and very easy to look at.

Both are beautiful. I seem to prefer this horizontal version for the more abstract composition.

Superb Alex. The frost and trees have a wonderful luminance against the darker background. Both the vertical and the horizontal are fantastic. I sort of favor the horizontal for the simplicity of design and the more graphic appeal.

They're both beautiful. I like how this one seems to have a nice layering of the dark BG, the aspen trunks and the frosted branches.

Wow, man! This is incredible! I might be in the minority, but I like this version better than the vertical.

Both are fantastic Alex, but i do prefer the vertical composition a lot over this one as the frozen grass at the bottom add a lot to the photo Imho.

These are beautiful. The icy branches are so perfectly delicate in both but the vertical is really marvelously composed

Generally, repeated verticals produce a more pleasing image in a horizontal frame, so its not surprising that you've come back to this version although the clumped interpretation in the original works well too. They're both really striking images.

I really love the "layered" look - it's not just a dark background, but progressively darker layers of the branches and (I think) evergreens behind.

Really nice Alex: you've used the trees and branches to echo frost patterns on window or water. Its a beautiful natural filagree. Your composition and exposure are spot on..no nits from me. I prefer this over the vertical. The vertical is more representational because you include the base of the trees..this seems more abstract to me.
