Well I lay my head
on the railroad track
Waiting on the Double E
But the train don't run
by here no more
Poor poor pitiful me
An oldie - the version I'm most familiar with is by Linda Ronstadt.

King Penguin
D80, 300mm f/4, handheld
ISO 400, 1/3000 sec, f/4
March 2008, the north coast of South Georgia (Bay of Isles).

Linda Ronstadt did the song fine. But the definitive version, for me, is by Zevon himself. And given his quirky and iconoclastic personality, I think WZ would have appreciated the strikingly bizarre nature of this shot. As do I. I don't want to talk about it.

It seems that this photo may need an explanation. King Penguin chicks have a brown down of feathers (left in attached photo) and huddle in creches (a group of many chicks) during the winter months. In the spring the chicks start to grow adult feathers (right). The bird in the photo I posted is molting: exchanging the down coat for the sleek coat of the adult.
The pose of the bird is artificial: the bird was repeatedly bending down to drink the water and then assuming a more erect posture. I snapped this photo in the middle of this transition.

Great caption for that shot! Looks like he just came from a Waring blender. And I agree, WZ wrote the tune and I think did it best.

Poor little one - looks like a case of the mange on steroids.
Best yet and there have been some mighty good ones.

WZ thumbs up

David: He does look pitiful but its nice that this marks a transition to a better state and isn't some kind of degeneration. Terrific shot.>=))>

Very pitiful! Nice to know that it is just molting and not terminal mange , or something

Good grief, David. What a great post for the theme and a brilliant pick of the song to go with. At first I thought this was a sickly, dying penguin chick, until thankfully it dawned on me that it was molting. Fine shot!
