WC424 - Of Moon and Mist

A full moon night and the clouds enabled me to include the moon in the photo. It was a cold and quiet night and the only sounds were the stream and some coyotes talking to each other in the distance. I like how the standing waves in the stream give it a realistic appearance despite the long exposure.

Wow, that is a nice picture. I've always wanted to get some good nightime shots with the moon in them. The trees are so sharp, and there's a neat light on the mountains. This is really nice. 10 seconds? wow, I'll have to try something like that. We've had rotten light for a long time, though. Constant overcast and a dull light that really brings out the cabin fever......

Hi Gary, this is a wonderful shot. It has painting like quality. How did you manage to get the waves in focus with 10 second shutter time !

I like the ripples in the water and the ridge and texture of the mountains..

Great low-light photo.

Thank you, all, for your kind comments.

Murali; the ripples are standing waves. They are cause by irregularities or objects in the river bed so they don't move or change shape much. They look the same all day and night so 10 seconds isn't a problem.

Love the composition Gary. I too wonder how to get the ripples to come out that well with a ten second exposure? I would have thought they'd be all creamy.

The moon is somewhat blown out. Would this be a case where you could apply HDR and get a clear moon and the perfect scene that you have here?

Wow, this is a stunning shot! Fantastic mood. Also, I had been wondering about the waves too; thanks for the explanation.

Good point about the HDR potential, Walt. Unfortunately this photo is fairly old. It was taken in 2003, before HDR software &/or methods were really in use anywhere. That and the fact that I only had about 7 months of photography experience at the time  Now-a-days I would automatically shoot multiple exposures for this type of scene.

Beautiful night image! Would have been perfect for last week's song title challenge as well. Moonlight Sonata comes to mind...
