Gorges du Doubs - 1
by Julian Barkway
The first in another short series from one of my favourite parts of Switzerland. The Gorges du Doubs straddles the Franco/Swiss border for some 50km and, although the flow of the river Doubs is regulated by several dams and hydro plants, the gorge has many sections which are wild and isolated - surprisingly so, given that civilization is never more than a couple of kms away as the crow flies.
The beauty of this location lies, in part, in the fact that there are no roads running along the length of the gorge and only three which cross it so you don't have to hike very far before you feel like you're in a different era with only birdsong breaking the silence.
