Eagle Launch

I took this photo in Iowa on the Missisippi River in foggy conditions. This was cropped only 15% which is great for me as I am usually not able to get close to Eagles. I use a nikon 70-300 lens with vibration reduction and never use a tripod. Please provide feedback to help me improve my skills.

Thanks

Rich,

I was at the old Army Depot near Savanah when I took this. I had to sneak up on her and I managed to get super close with my Elmer Fudd imitation.

Nice eagle shot. You have good detail in the body and head, which at times can be difficult with bald eagles. The wings are fairly sharp. IMHO the right wing sort of blends in with the trees in the background, but there is not much you can do about.it. This is better than any eagle photo I was able to come up with this year. Thanks for posting.

Richard,

To my eye it looks like the dof you used worked well and that combined with your ISO gave you sufficient shutter speed to freeze the action. The eagle appears a touch dark to me, perhaps at the time the photograph was made a positive adjustment in EV compensation might have helped with that, though you might then have needed to tone down the background.

As posted I would selectively increase the exposure of just the bird some to bring out more detail in the dark feathers.

Very nice work with your 70-300mm lens!

Richard, I agree precisely with what Mia said here. Nice that you got the head against the dark backdrop of the wing - it would probably get kinda lost against the lighter background.
