5:00 Shadow

Spotted this bighorn ram with a few ewes right off of the road - I pulled over, set up the tripod and was able to quietly shoot the group for all of 3 minutes before a 10-car "sheep jam" ensued and the sheep headed for higher ground. Guess I should've worn my camo...

I usually try to give the main subject of my shot a bit more space than this (both behind and above), but the sheep were pretty bunched up and I really wanted to isolate the ram from the shaded ewes. The light obviously wasn't great, and the shadows in the bg and across the ram's head bother me a bit. Any thoughts?

Stately fellow! The shadow across the face is a bit distracting, but fine detail and habitat.

Hi Guy,

I'm in agreement that the image is a little tighter than optimal, but totally appreciate the reasons why. I actually like the shadows in the background - I think they add some nice depth (and I like that the majority of this image - including foreground and background - is quite sharp). I did notice the shadow across the face right off the bat, but to say that it "bothered me" would be an exaggeration. It will be interesting to see what others think - I tend to be more tolerant of shadows than many others...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Hi Guy, I am not too bothered by the shadows, they are not blocked and have plenty detail left. The shadow of the horn across the face would have been a problem IMO if it would have crossed the eye, but it doesn't. You did a good job isolating this fellow.

All of the technical aspects look good and I am not bothered by the bright light. He could have given you a head turn for more light, but you did catch an edge of light there so it works.
