Female Orca and calf surfacing - photographed in 2006 in the Great Bear Rainforest of northern BC. We had good enough light (strong backlighting with heavily shaded forest background) to get the creative juices flowing!
I feel privileged and honoured that Creative Nature Photography declared this as the "Image of the Year" for 2008/2009 (they're off a normal calendar year with their awards).

Orcinus orca) and calf surfacing and blowing

As you infer in your field notes, it all came together perfectly with this composition. The spray of water enhances the sense of movement and action.
What a magnificent scene, captured with imagination and creativity as well as expertise. Congratulations on the honor, well deserved.
