Here's another image from Doi Inthanon National Park in Thailand taken during our trip there in January 2009. A pair of this species were hanging out in a flowering bush. The problem was they tended to stay in the middle of the bush and moved very fast. I tried with my main rig but just couldn't seem to get at them, so I put on my 300mm F4 which focuses closely. This gave me the ability to get in close to the birds and track them inside the bush, this was the result. I was pretty happy with it, considering the lighting. I applied noise reduction to the bg. Cropped to about 80% of FF.

MkIII 300F4 1.4X 1/50 F7.1 iso 1600, handheld

That's a neat looking image as a result. I love the colors of the bird and the different colors of the bg. The bird is super sharp too

nice work finding a way to get the shot, Nate. certainly a spectacular bird. love the sharpness, colors, and iridescence. there's some noise in the dark parts of the bird, but at ISO 1600, it still looks good, and I'd be thrilled to have taken this.

Excellent job. Great sharpness-especailly when handheld at 1/50. You must be steady as a rock. There is some noise at ISO 1600, but obviously needed for speed.

A beauty, Nate! These hyper-active birds are difficult to get a good image of - not to mention one as good as this. The flowers in the background (looks like hibiscus) add a nice environment touch.

Beautiful bird well captured - I especially like the iridescense about head, eye contact and pink accents in the background.

Unbelievably good, given the conditions you describe. not many photographers could have done as well.

From your description this is a very nice shot under difficult conditions. I like the colorful BG with the flowers. I think it is OOF enough to not be distracting. Personally I prefer BGs like this that show some environment and habitat over the perfectly smooth BGs that seem to be so popular. Nicely done.

What an awesome bird Nate. Love that beak. Pretty good sharpness for HH at 1/50 and ISO 1600. I see a bit of noise in the bird from the high ISO, but really not bad at all considering. Well executed.

Great capture Nate, I like how the bird is framed by the oof limbs as well. You've done great on the noise considering it was 1600, I'd certainly be happy with this too.

Handheld at 1/50 - nice job. Nice and sharp Nate, little bit of noise in the larger image in the wings but, at 1600, well done.

cheers
