River's Edge

by John Williams

Gallery: LandscapePosted April 19, 2010385 views27 comments
The weather was windy and overcast one of the mornings I was chasing flowers in Arizona, so I spent dawn along the Gila (pronounced hee'la) River near Duncan. The vegetation was just starting to bud with new color.

Nikon D80
Nikon 50 mm f/1.8
Hand Blend of 1/45 sec and 1/125 sec at f/11 and ISO 100

The form and subtle coloring here is wonderful, there is almost an antique feel to this image. The Gila can be so dramatic in places, but this is such a calm scene. Love this John.

The grass textures are really nice. I like how the trunk and branches lead you to similar textures at the tops of the trees.

Very elegant! The light is very interesting too - I like the golden tones and this is backlit (?).

This is so beautiful, John, that it almost doesn't look like a photograph. What a great picture to hang on the wall. It doesn't demand attention, but commands it none the less. Well done!

another fabulous image, John! love the colors here and detail, comp as well. very painterly. don´t know why, but this has an Africa feel to it. maybe it´s the colors and vegetation, don´t really know. I know this is awsome and that´s for sure.... !

Bruno, Although I didn't think of that myself, I've gotten that same comment at work and from a friend. There must be some overlap with a lot of the photos we see of African vegetation! Maybe it's the mistletoe in the cottonwoods?

I don´t really know, John....! I lived in Cape Town for about 11 years till I came to Azores with my parents. I think it maybe related to the colors, yellows/reds and gold, trees and weads. Man, I just saw some chilhood memories when looking to this image and believe me, I looked for a while. Once again, great comp John and thanks for "taking" me to the past.
