Singing Red-winged BB

Canon 7D, 500mm f/4 + 1.4x TC. Monopod

1/1000, f/5.6, ISO 1000

Crop to 76% (13.6 of 18MP).

This is from the same day as the Common Black-Hawk and the Pied-billed Grebe. In ACR, I brought the exposure up 0.3 stops, used recovery and fill, and desaturated the red channel by about 20 points until it looked ok on my calibrated monitor (the reds still look a little bright on my uncalibrated laptop). I also applied a selective brightness adjustment around the eye to make it stand out a little more. This ability to make selective adjustments in ACR (using the adjustment brush) is something I just learned about and found quite helpful here. I did not use any NR, as unfortunately the noise is mostly in the dark bird, not the bright bg.

I know these guys are awfully common, but I thought I got a good pose and setting here, with good sharpness throughout the bird. Does the noise in the bird detract for you?

Comments and critiques appreciated. Please view larger version if possible.

Excellent!
The only suggestion I'd make is to tone down the bright reed on the left.
Great pose, detail, colors, and eye!

Great detail in the blacks Brian - reds look good also. I'd be tempted to tone down the oof reed at the back of the upper wing.

cheers

These guys can really put on a show at this time of year and virtually ignore a slow moving photographer. You caught this one just right. Well done Brian.

Brian, this is just great. The reeds are a bit distracting, but that is where they live. Congrats on a hard bird to get proper exposure :toast:

You hit this one out of the park Brian. Noise isnt an issue for me and it's a step above the rest

Brian, I think the pose in this is awesome! I also like th eposition of the red-winged bb in the frame. I probably would do some NR on the BG on this. But I might also add just a smidge of black back to the bitd to loose some of the noise, but still keep the details. I think you can afford to have a bit more black, but hard to say without playing around with it. These are so incredibly hard to get perfect in my opinion. But yours is about 99.8% perfect

Beautiful pose, Brian. The noise doesn't bother me a bit. I'm not sure, since I'm at work and neither monitor here is that great, but it looks like you might have gotten a slight color shift when you desaturated your reds. Wonderful detail in the blacks and I really like the bg. :toast:

Excellent detail in a hard-to-shoot bird. The pose is perfect for these aggressive guys. The bright reed on the right should be quite easy to deal with & I would also be tempted to do something with the two at the top.

What a great pose from this RWBB.If this were mine I'd try Kurts suggestion of adding a bit more black back into the bird. Great jon on the eye...I'm gonna have to learn this technique myself. The reeds don't bother me at all as the bird really dominates here...great capture!

I really like the dramatic pose, handsome, handsome, handsome bird. His dark plumage really pops against the lighter background. Nice work on getting the details worked out in pp. :toast:

Great job on this, these birds are all over Sweetwater Wetlands but I have not been able to get a good shot like this. The larger image was a pleasure to view and the post processing was interesting to read about. Well done.

I think it's fine as posted, Brian. The noise level looks acceptable to me. The pose of the bird is great: he's really showing off and being vocal at the same time. There are a lot of these fellows around here these days: their calls dominate the environment everywhere I hike. I have a few shots of them but this is better than I've been able to capture. Nice work. :toast:

Very well done Brian! In my experience, to do these birds well you usually have to have the sun low at your back and the bird in a pose that puts most of the black feathers directly facing the sun. Then you need a head turn to get the eye and still have to be careful with the reds. Throw in an appropriate setting with no reeds in front of the bird. You've done all this, which isn't easy. I think this is very nice.
