Prickly Pear Blossom

Hi folks, not my usual take on flowers but for whatever reason, decided this was a keeper. If I were to do it again, I would have focused on the very closest blossoms and shot at more of an upward angle, possibly using a fill flash to get just a touch of shadow behind the foremost blossoms.

D700
70-200mm lens @ 125
f/2.8
1/1000 s
spot metering
VR
tripod used with one leg as a monopod

Processing included working separately on extended light levels in each color channel.

Fun project.

Looking forward to reading your reactions.

Carol,

I suppose you could have shot this differently but this certainly works well for me. Love the dof, the bg, pov and plane of focus decision. The in focus shapes remind me of a flame. As fine as any prickly pear shot I've seen. I like it very much.

Carol: I like this one a lot. I'll ditto Pat's comment. Is this recent? In my fairly extensive travels in the Hill Country this spring I've seen a lot of prickly pears with early buds but no flowers. Beautiful shot and processing.>=))>

Hi folks, thanks for the comments.

To answer Bill's question, this was taken this past week down in Bayview which is very close to the Gulf of Mexico and South Padre Island. Many cacti had already started to show the actual Prickly Pears and on my trip I learned how to make Nopales.

Fun trip.

I think it's just lovely! Nice POV and the softness compliments the soft pastel color very well.

A wonderful impressionistic take on this lovely flower of the cactus. The light on it is so cool.
