At least I think it's a house finch. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Taken with the canon 50D and Sigma 150-500.

Sharp with nice BG. Could crop a bit off the top.

Nice detail and composition, Clayton. It certainly looks like one of the finches to me. House or Purple is too tough a call for my expertise.

The lighting and background is gorgeous. I might be tempted to clone out the needles though.
I wondering though if perhaps this is a female Cassin's Finch instead. The female House Finches I'm accustomed to seeing are mousier gray brown overall with somewhat less defined streaking and a more conical (less pointed) bill.

I'm glad you said that Charles. I was wondering if that might be the case. Our problem is we have all three here and I think all at the same time. That is why I get confused. She does have the light colored eye ring also.

Really nice little bird and pose!
Fine detail in the feathers, and nice brach and BG too.
I'd suggest either cropping tighter, moving the bird down a bit in the frame, or slicing a bit off the top to remove some of the dead space.

Excellent detail in bird and perch with a nice bg. I would maybe remove the 3 spots in the eye. Sharon

This bird looks too good to be a House Finch. The yellow in the wings makes me think it's something else. Really a nice pose and a fine capture.

I like the detail, color and contrast, outstanding. I would prefer if the needles were not there, but I also think cloning all of them would be beyond reasonable in my books.

A little beauty and well captured with nice sharp details. I like the needles except for the tip of the one between the bird's feet. Oh, if that isn't just fussy of me... And I think the amount of space around the bird suits the image, and the bird, very well.

excellent, Clayton, one of your best. very sharp, nice bg, and I like your comp as is.
This is definitely a Cassin's Finch. The streaks are crisper than they would be on either a House or Purple Finch, and the culmen (top of the bill) is longer and straighter. The face pattern is too strong for House, and the streaked undertail coverts rule out Purple.

An excellent shot of this female Cassin's Finch. I think the needles are just fine.

Very nice shot. The pose, perch and BG all look great with nice detail in the plumage. The needles bother me not at all.
