The weather I love

This is the Pian del Valasco, an awesome plateau at 1800 meters of elevation in the heart of the Alpi Marittime natural park in Piedmont, Italy. I took this picture about 30 minutes after sunset, while a fast traveling front was approaching from west. The light show was very impressive, although it only lasted for the time it took me to take 4 verticals of 25" of exposure each.
Everything happened very fast indeed: only 5 minutes earlier there was almost no fog in the valley, and just 5 minutes later it had already filled up everything. It was a treat to be there, one of those moments you feel you just got to the right place at the right time.
About the title, well, those were simply the words that were rolling around my mind while, thrilled to bone, I was looking through the viewfinder at the fog rolling down the slopes and into the valley: in a corner of my mind a voice was just repeating ad-libitum "this is just the weather I love, this is just the weather I love..." The kind of insanity that hits those who are standing with their feet in the water, at about 2000 meters of altitude, at 10 pm on a Friday evening, I guess...

Paolo,
I am so glad you chose this one to add to this gallery. I think most of us can identify with the title and your thoughts as you shot this. The top 2/3 of the image is wonderful, and the colorful details of the FG make it even more memorable.

Foreground, midground, background; this is strong throughout, Paolo. The colors
complement each other perfectly. The shutter speed for the stream flow looks
correct. This is one of the most beautiful images that I've ever seen on NPN.

I love this kind of weather too Paolo. Great drama in the sky but the elements and detail in the foreground are also spectacular... the greenery, the red flowers, the lichen. Beautiful work!

I know exactly what you were feeling, Paolo. Transitional weather with fast changing light and fog is my most favorite conditions but it can be difficult to shoot because you have to be fast and the dynamic range of the light can be a challenge. I'm not a big fan of veiled water because it is so unrealistic but the rest of this scene is absolutely spectacular!! The exposure is perfect with all the texture and detail available in the snow and sky highlights yet retaining excellent detail in the shadows. The detail is exquisite and the colors perfectly natural. The splash of red in the corner is a nice bonus too. Very, very well done!! :toast: :toast:
