Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge. An oft photographed icon, but every northwestern photographer needs some of these waterfalls in their portfolio. This is a little wider view than typical, but I liked the tree at the bottom.

dripping with moisture and lushness. the range of greens is superbly rendered. i like your tree as well - and perhaps wish for a little more of it. all in all, a very pleasant photo.

I like this different perspective of Metlako. The tree seems to anchor the photograph and leads your eye back to the waterfall. Well done.

I love that tree at the bottom too, John. The saturation is a bit high and the contrast a bit low for me, but it makes for a very painterly rendering.

This is great John. I like the unique comp. There is something really 3-d about the presentation. Mind sharing some of the processing details to achieve this, or is it pretty much just a result of the scene, camera, and lighting?

I like the wider perspective here and the bright tree at the bottom really adds to the image. Really makes me want to get out to the gorge to check out the spring colors. Well done John!

Wonderful image John. Great sight from top to bottom. I'm curious about a couple of things. Is that a path at the bottom and if it is, how did you get so far above it? I assume there is an overlook there. Excellent image.

This is beautiful John, I love your wider comp here and your processing is excellent. I've tried similar variations at this spot, but none with as much success as this. It was great to meet you up there, I wish we could have hung out more. I hope to see you out in the field again soon.

Thanks to all for your kind words and thoughts.

Chip- My answer ended up being a bit long and convoluted, so I popped you an e-mail.

Dean- That's actually the river below. You are correct, this is from an overlook. The trail is high on the canyon wall at this point, and there is no easy way down that I know of. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a shot from the base of Metlako. Besides zoomed in shots, the only other view I've seen is the one from above (here's Marc's take). If you ever get a chance, definitely hike Eagle Creek if you are in this area. It has to be one of the best hikes in the Pacific Northwest.

Zack- Ditto! I'm assuming you were working one-on-one with a client? If so, I must say I was very impressed; it looked like you were spending a great amount of detailed time working the scene with those lower falls.

Hi John, I like the tree as the contrast to the waterfall. I like this shot very much. Maybe a little nit would be to go for a very little more contrast in shadows.

This comp is bizarre, and at first look im not sure what to think. I like bizarre, so that's a good start i guess  On the one hand, it seems natural because the falls are tucked away behind dense foliage, and i imagine that's how you would encounter the scene in person. On the other hand, the effort in getting the falls in a visible location almost seems like an uphill struggle, since so much of the comp here focuses on the lush fg material. So, it kind of puzzles me what the objective here is (hope that makes some bit of sense). It's definitely evocative, an artistic statement, but i have a suspicion that photographers are going to like this a lot more than the public at large. So, guess it depends on who you're trying to reach.
Anyhow--i like it!

This has to be one of the best waterfall images I have ever seen. I really like how the fall is just part of a broader landscape, perfect composition!

Simply loved the composition John.
The greens look a wee bit over-saturated to me on my monitor.

This may be the best picture every of these falls. I really like the wide perspective and the detail and framing of the trees. My only thought is that the image seems a bit warm/yellow. This may be intentional, and it actually looks pretty good, so it's not really much of a problem.

A unique take on a waterfall image, John, and I like it. It's refreshing. I too love the tree in the fg. I'm on the fence about the hues of green, though. But the detail is fabulous.
