Red-breasted Merganser

Two of these males in breeding plumage spent most of April hanging around at a local fishing pond. This is the first opportunity I've had with them and I'm definitely adding them to my list of species that are difficult to expose. The light on the face has to be from just the right angle to get any detail in the blacks without blowing out the whites. In this image I did lighten the blacks slightly and though a couple of the white secondaries seem a little bright they're not over 254 in a threshold layer.

7D, 1/2500, f/6.3, ISO 320, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from a tripod on 4-13-10, cropped to 48% of original image, lightened the blacks a little, cloned out the lower part of a very OOF bird that poked into the upper frame edge, sharpened, no other processing, natural light

Comments/critique appreciated

I can appreciate your exposure problems Ron, its difficult to control the whites in direct sunlight, but this looks pretty good to me. You've captured a nice pose here which is really sharp - glad to see your camera is working okay! Graham

You've done well with the exposure - we've all seen examples where the whites on this species are completely blown. I also like the body position here that gives the image some good action.

I love this bird also. Looks like a High School Kids hair do. I found one on the Bechler River in Yellowstone on a back country ski trip a month ago. Beautifully done Ron

You did manage to get it the first time. It is one that really makes you stop. All the potential problems were avoided.Bravo!

Incredible detail as always Ron. Really like the looping string of water droplets at the bottom of the birds right wing. Exposure is spot on as well

Really nice, Dan. The exposure and sharpness are spot on. If I had to make a suggestion it would be to have a little more room at the bottom of the frame,,,,,, but now I'm just picking.

Really different pose you captured Ron, I like it a lot. Love the detail with the visible water droplets streaming off the breast, cool red eye and orange bill as well. Whites look excellent from my seat in front of this imac. Nice work Ron!!! :toast:

I agree these guys are really tough to expose properly. I would almost rather blow a few whites and get some nice color on the head with this species. This looks great and the wing spread is neat. :toast:

You have certainly brought out the details in the blacks. Love the red eye with perfect catchlight. Well done.
