Going thru images for possible publication and came across this one. I almost didn't keep it because of poor lighting but thanks to PS I think I managed to save it. I cloned out the distracting bg stuff. Does it look OK? The bg was white so I did a light fill as well.

Cheryl, this is one of those images whose success depends on how it might be used, imo. This has a graphic art feeling, due to the all-missing background. I think the composition works quite well for a book or brochure cover needing some text. I don't see this working as well as a piece for someones wall. The curves of heads and trunks make for pleasing leading lines with the main subjects pleasingly placed in the frame. I am undecided if I wish for the top of the mother's trunk to be included...

Thankyou Lon. Yes I wish I had all of the trunk. I think what I'm shooting for is the greeting card, calenadars for this one. It would make a nice mom's day card I think. Thanks much for the feedback

Cheryl, I love the interaction, the detail and the perspective here. Lon is so right about the possible uses for an image like this with that all white BG, but you realise that and your approach seem right to get the maximum use out of it! It does look a little over-sharpened to me. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Cheryl,

I think Lon's comment about the intended use is very valid - I'm sure it could be "published" somewhere - the trick is finding the right place. Personally that white background reduces my appreciation for the shot as a piece of "natural" art and makes me think instantly (without reading your commentary) that it's a zoo shot. Which brings up another point: does this zoo allow you to use images captured within its facility to be published for commercial gain? The zoos I'm most familiar with don't, though I don't know how widespread this practice of reserving publication rights (by zoos) is.

From a purely aesthetic perspective...I like the action you've captured here and how the elephants are "all wrapped up" in each other. That clipped trunk is a bit unfortunate, but probably not a "deal-breaker" (again, depending on how one markets the shot).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

Great image, Cheryl. This may also look nice in a contrasty black and white. :toast: :jump:

LIke the tight crop and the interaction. Great detail in the skin as well.
